MADE TO FREE Button Up

The Idea Behind the Look

CONTINUATION OF OBSESSIVE SURFACE TEXTILE PROJECT

This garment was constructed out of hand embroidered broadcloth, completing the MADE TO FREE set. The textile will include obsessive black embroidered words and is finished with matte black buttons.

Each pattern piece is embroidered on a double layer of 100% cotton bleached broadcloth with all purpose black sewing thread.

The first step in this process was hand drafting a traditional menswear button up block pattern using the measurements of an average fit man. The pattern was then stylistically altered to dramatize certain elements about the draping and fit of the garment. These changes are reflected in the length of the arms and conversely the cropped length of the body.

Next, the pattern pieces were cut and serged in order to keep the double layered broadcloth in place. Each panel was hand embroidered using all purpose black sewing thread to create an obsessive surface texture and pattern. This pattern or texture reads a phrase that was written by the designer back in 2019, and used an embroidery loop to straight stitch the same stanza over and over, creating an obsessive and detailed pattern and texture. The phrase reads,

“A beat up key that couldn’t fit the lock it was made to free.”
