MADE TO FREE Pants

The Idea Behind the Look

CREATED FOR A CLASS FINAL PROJECT

This garment reads as an oversized cropped pant made out of hand embroidered broadcloth. This garment is an extension of an obsessive surfaces project for a University class, Intro to Textiles. The embroidered yardage will include obsessive black embroidered poetry with baby pink accents, and finished with silver hardware and notions.

The garment incorporates a double layered 100% cotton bleached broadcloth, and all purpose black cotton sewing thread. The embroidery process of the yardage was completed on two layers of fabric and when finished, it resulted with a textile of ~14” wide and 5’5” long.

Using a baggy jean sewing pattern, EDEN first created a mock-up sample in muslin in order to stylistically fit and alter the pattern if needed. The designer drew inspiration from the iconic baggy jeans brand, JNCO, and incorporated a baggy, straight leg form into the design. There was enough embroidered broadcloth to create a capri length pant, with all white accents in the pattern. The pattern or texture of the pants reads a phrase that the designer wrote herself back in 2019, and used an embroidery loop to straight stitch the same stanza over and over, creating an obsessive and detailed pattern and texture. The phrase reads,

“A beat up key that couldn’t fit the lock it was made to free.”

With this in mind, this garment truly is a reflection of the words that circle her mind, and essentially have been transcribed into a wearable journal.
